Pit fire day!
Well I’m starting new gallery work bit of a change from the functional I know! But the results talk for themselves. Had a yet another great day, got into the woods about 9ish and set up camp and the Great British weather was doing its worst and rained all day. So tarps went up, light Kelly kettle, no light but had my fire steel so Ray Mears I was stripped some birch bark and set to, kettle lit. I had dropped off the bricks the day before and made a tall ring with them, the idea was to have a bed of sawdust for the pots to go on and stack timber around (driftwood, hay, and sawdust with iron oxide, copper oxide, salt, pine cones, and any timber lying dry in the wood). First the pots were wrapped in seaweed, wire wool (which I sliced my finger with, so the blood may have helped), copper wire, brillo pads, newspaper, aluminium foil, driftwood pieces, and anything that wasn’t moving! This large heap of wrapped pots and timber was lit from the top, and stoked for an hour. Or until our faces were so hot and pink we needed a break ( See Pensive Polly Pic lol). I found out afterward I had burnt my eye lids so it was canny hot like! Lunch followed got the sausage on the grill and kettle boiling. Chill out time while we waited for the fire to burn down. Pots started to appear, ash covered, and charred. So careful lifting process next and placed these on the walls of the kiln to cool slowly, as they cooled the colours blossomed on the pots, to the chorus of “oh look at that one, Nice, hmmm, wow,” etc like fire works night. So have a look at the pots and I running workshops now “Pit fired Pottery” In Horsegate Wood. There will be more and more workshops and open days in Horsegate Wood, so watch this space to hear more info. If you are interested in taking part, drop me an email or add a comment.
Raku Day Sunday 8th June 2008 Blaydon Burn Family day out come and see us and have a chat and fire a Raku tile. Many more activities as well!!!! May 11 Bread Oven- Bill Quay Farm stage 1Bread Oven at Bill Quay Farm
The oven making and firing went great, brick built its over in Bill Quay Farm. Still there if you want a look (but not for long as this was a temporary oven). This oven was made in one day and fired the next.
Damp weather didn't help took about 5 hours of firing to try to dry it out, and managed to get 1 hour of baking done. By my god that bread was good! It was the participation that bowled me over.
First day the materials were late from the supplier, I was also running a clay workshop along side and in between making the oven. (I know good job I can juggle). So set up the tables with lumps of clay and asked the kids to design the oven in clay what the finished design would be. They made some wonderful things from rockets, animals, cakes, cars .....great. Just as that started the materials (i.e. bricks) turned up at the same time.
Two lovely people (adults) also paid their £1 fee to join in and asked if they could help me make the oven as they wanted one for their own. Great more hands the merrier. And they were fabulous if it wasn't for them I would be still making the next day.
People were so excited by all that was happening and loads of offers of dough to be made overnight and brought in the next day. I was gobsmacked by the community spirit and involvement of so many people willing the thing to work and no doubts about what was happening, and ideas given about what to do next, it all seemed very natural.
We "Topped off" the dome about tea time and set to rendering the out side, everyone had gone I found out that one of the sows in the farm had pigged. So Pig it was and set to decorating the oven adding eyes, ears, and tail the rest was already there! That was in the dark. Decided that was all I could do before collapsing, a glass of wine was calling me from home!
Next day bright and early finished off some rendering to tart her up a bit hide her flaws (a bit of make up). Lit the first fire in the mouth of the oven, (lots of wood needed I must add) and ran out of wood quickly, but that was fixed quick by one of the lads from the farm who cut up loads for the oven. It did take a long time to figure out how to fire her without the fire dying out (the wood was a little damp with all the rain the night before). I was in a cloud of smoke most of the day.
Loads of bread dough started to arrive from all who promised (LOADS) but great we managed to cook lots and eat lots. Kids made breads with pesto on top, and tomatoes and herbs kneaded in and ate it all. We cooked in baked bean tins and proper trays from a £1 shop. Kids ate new food and loved it. Fantastic I would do it over and over no problem.
They have asked me to make a permanent oven and do more workshops.
So watch this space!! March 31 SNCG updatePhotos of Scotswood Natural Community Garden have been posted now.
Nature Club printed soft clay tiles with collected objects from around the Community garden (leaves, poppy heads, sticks, seeds, stones, etc). Marvin then cut to shapes and moulded into stool shapes and blended with coils. Stools were then fired to 900ºC, and left to cool.
Then they traveled back to SNCG to be glazed by Nature Club, they applied oxides first then stoneware glazes over the top. Loads of mess loads of fun!
Stools then traveled back to Muddy Fingers to be then fired to 1200ºC and the glaze to melt and fuse with the pots/ stools.
Pots traveled back to SNCG where volenteers helped with the installation process (more than helped really, thanks again).
So the seats are finally in place to park yourself, please check out their site for events and opening times http://www.sncg.org.uk/
